House Republicans find themselves in a tight spot as they grapple with the challenge of passing their tax cuts aimed at the affluent. The bill’s advancement is uncertain, with the House Budget Committee currently lacking the necessary votes to push it forward.
A planned vote on Friday within the House Budget Committee to advance the GOP megabill is increasingly at risk, as at least three hardline members have committed to opposing the party-line legislation.
Rep. Ralph Norman (R-S.C.), a member of the Budget Committee, has stated that he will vote against the comprehensive tax cuts, border security allocations, energy policy adjustments, and additional measures included in the package.
Joining him in this dissent are Reps. Josh Brecheen of Oklahoma and Chip Roy of Texas. Their dissatisfaction was palpable in a briefing with the Congressional Budget Office chief, where they expressed frustration upon discovering that the CBO would not provide cost estimates for the Energy and Commerce Committeeâs segment of the bill until early next week, according to sources privy to the meeting.
The successful markup in the Budget Committee is pivotal for Speaker Mike Johnsonâs strategy to pass the proposed tax cuts for the wealthy alongside cuts to Medicaid through the entire House next week. Any delays in the markup could subsequently push back the vote on this contentious legislation.
Significant doubts loom over whether the full House can indeed rally behind Trump’s âBig Beautiful Bill.â The legislation appears to be in serious jeopardy, facing a lack of cohesion among Republicans, whose internal disputes may ultimately undermine Trump’s broader agenda.
