Brussels:

The head of the UN refugee agency expressed dismay on Wednesday at President Donald Trump’s surprising proposal for the United States to assume control of the Gaza Strip and relocate its inhabitants.

Filippo Grandi, the United Nations’ high commissioner for refugees, shared with AFP in an interview in Brussels his confusion over the unclear nature of the proposal, making it challenging to comment on such a delicate matter.

“It’s quite unexpected, but we need to understand its specifics before forming an opinion,” Grandi remarked.

Trump’s statement, made during a press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, drew audible gasps as he suggested transforming the war-torn territory into a remarkable place by clearing unexploded ordnance, debris, and initiating economic redevelopment.

Grandi also mentioned ongoing negotiations with the US for support following the announcement of a substantial cut in American aid.

“The situation is evolving rapidly, posing a challenge for our organization, which cannot afford delays,” Grandi emphasized.

The US presently contributes up to 40 percent of the total funds received by the UNHCR, Grandi added.
