Miami:
Relations between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky have soured as Trump referred to Zelensky as a “dictator,” escalating tensions in the ongoing conflict sparked by Russia’s invasion three years ago.
While the United States had previously supported Ukraine with funding and arms, Trump’s shift in policy towards Moscow has caused a rift in their relationship.
Trump criticized Zelensky on his Truth Social platform, stating, “A Dictator without Elections, Zelenskyy better move fast or he is not going to have a Country left,” questioning the legitimacy of Zelensky’s leadership as his term expired last year.
Trump’s recent press conference saw him echoing Kremlin narratives about the conflict and advocating for an end to the war, while Zelensky accused Trump of falling for Russian “disinformation.”
Despite Trump’s claims, Zelensky remains in power under martial law imposed after the Russian invasion, with a consistent level of trust from the Ukrainian people, according to the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS).
