As Donald Trump’s poll numbers continue their downward spiral, he seems to be frantically searching for ways to sidestep what is increasingly appearing to be a foregone conclusion. Recent polling suggests that Democrats are poised not only to reclaim the House majority but are also gaining momentum in their quest to flip the Senate.
The Cook Political Report’s Poll Tracker paints a stark picture of Trump’s current standing, which spells trouble not just for him but for Republicans gearing up for the elections this November:
Currently, Trump’s overall approval rating hovers at a dismal 41.0%, a drop from 47.3% when the Cook Political Report first started compiling their aggregate polling nearly a year ago. Back in March 2025, his net approval was nearly balanced at -1.6% (47.3% approval vs. 48.9% disapproval). Now, that figure has plummeted to -15.3%, marking a staggering decline of nearly 14 points.
The erosion of support is particularly pronounced among key voter demographics that once formed the backbone of Trump’s coalition: young voters have decreased in approval by a net 24.5% since last March, Latinos by 16.0%, and independents by 23.7%. Notably, fewer than 30% of independent voters currently express approval of the president’s performance.
The Cook Political Report utilizes 21 meticulously vetted metrics to assess these trends, revealing that Trump’s approval has been on a consistent decline since March 2025.
