Donald Trump’s rise to the presidency hinged on the support of rural America. In a surprising turn, a figure from New York City managed to convince rural voters that he understood and shared their concerns.

For those who closely observed, it was evident that Trump lacked genuine understanding or interest in rural America. However, rural voters appreciated how he addressed them and exploited their skepticism of elites by portraying himself as an outsider familiar with the workings of “the swamp.”

By 2024, the narratives Trump crafted further deepened his appeal in rural America, enabling him to widen his lead over then-VP Kamala Harris by 40 points among these voters.

A significant number of these voters seemed unaware of what they were endorsing. Trump frequently discussed tariffs and mass deportations during the campaign. Even at the Republican National Convention, mass deportation signs were prominently displayed, indicating that warnings were present.

There were clear indications of the direction things were headed. If people chose to ignore them, the responsibility lies with them.

As economic pressures mounted on the already struggling population, the inevitable breaking point has finally been reached.
