In a striking display of irony, The Washington Post and The New York Times were awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 2018 for their coverage of the now-infamous Russia collusion narrative. Recent revelations suggest that this entire saga was built on a foundation of falsehoods, ostensibly aiming to undermine former President Trump.
Despite the revelations about the dubious nature of their reporting, not one of the involved journalists has had the decency to relinquish their coveted award for misleading the public.
The latest Gallup poll highlights a dramatic decrease in American trust in the media, now at an alarming low of just 20%. This is a stark drop from 40% five years prior, suggesting a growing disillusionment with mainstream journalism.
This erosion of trust likely stems from what many perceive as a continuous string of inaccuracies and biased reporting.
Historically, Gallup has tracked media trust since the 1970s, when between 68% and 72% of Americans expressed confidence in news reporting. By 1997, this figure plummeted to 53%. Subsequent years saw it hover just above 50%, with a dramatic decline to 44% in 2004, which has never fully recovered. The peak of trust in the past decade was a meager 45% in 2018, right after a significant trust collapse during the polarizing 2016 presidential elections.
Current figures depict the stark partisan divide in trust levels: Republicans stand at a mere 8%, while Democrats show slightly more optimism at 51%—just over half.
In a collaborative study by Gallup and the Knight Foundation this year, only 26% of Americans had a favorable view of the news media, with half believing that mainstream outlets deliberately mislead the public.
Moreover, a 2021 study revealed that the United States ranks last among 46 countries surveyed regarding trust in media. Significantly, this data was collected during the COVID-19 pandemic, a time when many were misled, leading to further skepticism when the truth came to light.
