Mexican Nationals Arrested for Transporting Massive Ammunition Cache in Colorado

In a striking incident last month, two Mexican nationals were apprehended in Colorado while allegedly transporting a staggering 180,000 rounds of ammunition, according to federal authorities. This arrest took place during a routine traffic stop, raising questions about border security and the implications of immigration policies.

Caesar Ramon Martinez Solis, 41, and Humberto Ivan Amador Gavira, 24, were pulled over on March 26th in Cañon City, as reported by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Colorado. The stop came after officers observed their white Chevrolet van displaying multiple traffic violations: failing to dim headlights, neglecting to signal a turn, and sporting a broken license plate light.

Upon searching the vehicle, authorities discovered approximately 150 boxes of .308 ammunition and 30 boxes of 7.62 ammunition, each box presumably containing 1,000 rounds. This substantial cache sparked immediate concern regarding the potential for these weapons to be used in violent crime.

Martinez Solis voluntarily spoke with Homeland Security agents, waiving his right to legal counsel. He disclosed that he and Amador Gavira had crossed into the United States from Mexico to inspect a vehicle in Denver. Subsequently, they traveled to Salt Lake City, where Amador Gavira reportedly purchased the ammunition from a gun shop.

Martinez Solis claimed ignorance regarding the intended use of the ammunition but believed it was meant for a destination in Pueblo, a location saved on Amador Gavira’s phone, though authorities have not confirmed the specifics of this destination.

Both men face charges for unlawful possession of ammunition by individuals admitted under a nonimmigrant visa. This case is under investigation by Homeland Security Investigations, the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.

The arrests form part of Operation Take Back America, a broader federal initiative aimed at curbing illegal immigration and dismantling transnational crime networks, including those linked to drug cartels. The Trump administration’s approach has focused on tackling these organizations by designating them as foreign terrorist entities, thereby enhancing the legal framework to address such threats more severely.
