The U.S. Men’s National Soccer Team has concluded its World Cup journey following a challenging 4-1 defeat to Belgium in the Round of 16 on Monday evening.
The match, held before a full house at Seattle Stadium, saw Belgium securing victory over the U.S. This event is projected to achieve NFL-level ratings, as the World Cup’s viewership in the U.S. has been consistently rising for broadcasters Fox Sports and Telemundo/Peacock. The 39-day tournament, which commenced on June 11, is expected to wrap up on July 19.
The U.S. Men’s team aimed to reach the World Cup quarterfinals for the first time since 2002. Their victory against Bosnia-Herzegovina on July 1 had generated excitement and increased interest among American viewers as the tournament unfolds across 11 U.S. cities, with additional venues in Canada and Mexico.
The U.S. Men’s team aspired to make significant strides in the men’s soccer scene, paralleling the U.S. women’s team, which has claimed the Women’s World Cup titles in 1991, 1999, 2015, and 2019.
Commentators have lauded the U.S. Men’s team for capturing the public’s imagination, featuring standout players such as Malik Tillman, who scored the team’s sole goal in the game, along with Folarin Balogun, Alex Freeman, Chris Richards, Christian Pulisic, and Tyler Adams, among others.
U.S. team coach Mauricio Pochettino, in his post-game interview with Fox Sports, candidly assessed the team’s performance. He remarked that the team did not exhibit the same skill and coordination that propelled them past the Group Stage rounds. Belgium capitalized on an early lead and maintained their advantage throughout the match.
“It’s not to find excuses or an argument. We didn’t show up like the team that had showed up [earlier in the tournament]. That is a reality,” Pochettino told Fox Sports. “We need to assess the game and why we didn’t approach this game the same way.” He accepted responsibility for the outcome.
Fox Sports commentator Carli Lloyd, a member of the Women’s World Cup-winning teams and a retired professional soccer player, echoed the coach’s sentiments regarding the team’s difficulties on Monday.
“They lost the game before they even stepped out on to the pitch, and I’m not sure why,” Lloyd said. “This is a real disappointing loss to go out on.”
