UK to Sanction Israeli Ultranationalist Ministers

The UK government is set to sanction Israeli ultranationalist finance minister Bezalel Smotrich and national security minister Itamar Ben-Gvir on Tuesday, according to sources familiar with the situation.

The decision to impose sanctions on these ministers would be unprecedented in Western relations with Israel, reflecting mounting frustration over the lack of aid to Gaza and Israel’s recent military actions in the region.

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar confirmed on Tuesday that the UK had notified the Israeli government of its intention to sanction the two ministers.

Responding to the news, Sa’ar criticized the UK’s decision, calling it “outrageous” and stating that he would convene a special government meeting with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to discuss how to respond to what he deemed an “unacceptable decision”.
