Man Arrested for Assaulting NYPD Officer in Subway Station

After allegedly striking an NYPD officer on the head, Sergio Santiago, 41, was apprehended by law enforcement sources on Friday morning. The incident took place in the B and D train mezzanine of the Fordham Road subway station around 5:20 p.m. on Thursday. Santiago reportedly threw an object at the officer’s head and fled the scene, causing a cut on the officer’s head. The injured officer was promptly taken to St. Barnabas Hospital and is currently in stable condition.

Santiago, who has a history of six prior arrests, is facing pending charges for this assault. The NYPD officers had initially approached Santiago as he was wanted for questioning in connection to an earlier stabbing that occurred at East 157th Street and Gerard Avenue on the same day. The victim of the stabbing is also reported to be in stable condition.

With one active warrant from February 4 related to a violation in the transit system, Santiago was previously arrested on January 22 when he was found lying on a train passing through Crown Heights. While he was still at large, the NYPD released images of Santiago, including a mugshot and a surveillance image showing him with a disheveled appearance, a thicker beard, longer hair, and a bulky black coat while walking on the sidewalk.
