Passengers traveling to or from Newark Liberty International Airport faced significant delays and cancellations on Saturday due to an air traffic controller shortage, a widespread issue that the Trump administration has promised to address.
The busy airport near New York City experienced disruptions throughout the week, leading United Airlines to cut 35 daily flights from its schedule starting Saturday. United CEO Scott Kirby cited technology failures at the airport and the departure of more than one-fifth of Newark’s air traffic controllers as contributing factors to the flight disruptions.
According to reports from the FAA, staffing issues were causing average delays of nearly two hours for arriving flights and 45-minute delays for departures at Newark. The administration has acknowledged the shortage of air traffic controllers and has pledged to increase recruitment efforts and provide incentives for existing controllers to stay.
While the moves by the administration and airlines may help alleviate the staffing shortages, the National Air Traffic Controllers Association emphasized the need for long-overdue technology and infrastructure upgrades in the air traffic control system.
As uncertainties surrounding air travel and the economy persist, United Airlines has provided two distinct forecasts for its financial performance this year, one in anticipation of a recession and one without.
