UnitedHealth Group announced a major leadership transition on Tuesday, with Andrew Witty stepping down for “personal reasons” and former CEO Stephen J. Hemsley returning to take the helm. Witty, who testified at a Senate Finance Committee hearing just days before his departure, will now serve as a senior advisor to Hemsley.

The company also revealed that it is suspending its financial outlook for the remainder of the year due to challenges in its Medicare Advantage business. UnitedHealth Group, known for its ownership of UnitedHealthcare and various healthcare services under the Optum umbrella, is facing rising healthcare costs that are impacting its financial projections.

This move comes on the heels of another recent management shakeup at the company, as Dr. Patrick Conway was promoted to CEO of Optum. UnitedHealth has been grappling with lower-than-expected earnings, attributed to the increasing costs of caring for seniors in its Medicare plans.

Despite these challenges, Hemsley expressed optimism about the company’s future growth potential, aiming to return to a long-term growth objective of 13 to 16 percent. He highlighted the opportunities for UnitedHealth to continue improving healthcare and reaching its full potential.

Witty, in his brief statement, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lead UnitedHealth Group and praised the dedication of the company’s employees in improving the health system. The company had previously adjusted its 2025 performance outlook, leading to a decrease in earnings per share and a hit to its share price.

UnitedHealth’s decision to suspend its 2025 outlook reflects the ongoing challenges in the healthcare industry, with accelerated care activity and higher-than-expected medical costs for Medicare Advantage beneficiaries. Despite these setbacks, the company is optimistic about returning to growth in 2026.

This latest leadership transition and financial update underscore the complex landscape of the healthcare industry and the ongoing efforts of companies like UnitedHealth Group to navigate these challenges while striving for long-term growth and success.
