Join a Thriving Community of Artists at Notre Dame

Immerse yourself in a transformative experience as an artist surrounded by a diverse and supportive community of exceptional faculty and fellow graduate students at Notre Dame. Our MFA program offers a unique opportunity to explore new techniques, refine your artistic philosophy, and gain valuable teaching experience at one of the top universities in the United States. As a global research university, Notre Dame provides opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration and international engagement, with funding available for research travel.

Ranked as a tier 1 research university, Notre Dame grants students access to world-class scholars and cultural events across the institution. Our dedicated faculty work closely with graduate students to cultivate their work in a nurturing yet critical environment, enhanced by a lineup of visiting artists, designers, critics, and art historians.

Located within easy reach of renowned museums and galleries in Chicago, Indianapolis, Toledo, and Detroit, students have abundant opportunities to enrich their research and practice. The program offers full tuition waivers to all admitted students, along with a generous $25,000 stipend. Various grants and awards are also available to support travel, supplies, and other research-related expenses, making the MFA program financially accessible without burdening artists with significant debt.

The MFA degree in studio art or design is a comprehensive three-year, 60-credit program. Graduate students have the flexibility to pursue their area of interest through independent study courses with faculty guidance. Furthermore, qualified graduate students have the chance to gain valuable teaching experience at the college level during their second and third years of study.
