An Upstate New York teenager has been arrested for the murder of his 14-year-old girlfriend after she informed him of her pregnancy, prosecutors revealed. The tragic incident occurred more than two years ago, when Samantha Humphrey’s body was found in the Mohawk River, having been strangled.
Humphrey, a resident of Schenectady, had gone missing for three months before her remains were discovered. The accused teen, whose identity remains undisclosed due to his age, confessed to being with her on the fateful night and engaging in a heated argument, as per Humphrey’s mother Jaclyn.
According to Schenectady County District Attorney Robert M. Carney, it is believed that Humphrey believed she was pregnant with the suspect’s child. However, he allegedly expressed his reluctance to have any involvement with the baby, pressuring her to terminate the pregnancy.
The teenager has been charged with second-degree murder and theft in connection with the case. As a juvenile, he faces a maximum sentence of 15 years to life, which is less severe than the potential 25 years to life sentence for an adult offender.
During his arraignment in Schenectady County Court, the accused pleaded not guilty and was remanded to a juvenile detention center. The trial is expected to commence next year.
Humphrey was last seen alive on November 25, 2022, clad in a black and pink puffy jacket, bell-bottom jeans, and tan Timberland boots. Her disappearance sparked a widespread search operation, with her cellphone and a jacket matching the one she wore on the night she vanished being discovered within the initial week of her disappearance.
The tragic loss of Samantha Humphrey has left her loved ones grieving, as they seek closure and justice for her untimely death.
