Uruguay players punished by their football association after FIFA World Cup exit

The Uruguayan Football Association (AUF) has taken disciplinary action against its players following their elimination from the FIFA World Cup, as reported by journalist Martin Charquero. The players had anticipated traveling to Montevideo on a charter flight, but the AUF canceled this arrangement for Marcelo Bielsa’s team, according to the journalist’s revelations.

As a result, the players reportedly had to book their own commercial flights to return home, marking a disappointing conclusion for a squad that had shown great potential from a nation with two FIFA World Cup victories. This unexpected outcome for such a talented team is indeed sobering.

Uruguay exited the tournament at the group stage for the second consecutive time, finishing third in Group H with a mere two points. Despite their status as two-time champions, they failed to win any of their three matches, including a 2-2 draw against the underdogs, Cape Verde.

Their fate was ultimately sealed by a 1-0 defeat to European champions Spain in Guadalajara. A critical mistake by veteran goalkeeper Fernando Muslera allowed Spain to score in the 42nd minute, and Uruguay was unable to recover from this setback. Agustín Canobbio added to their woes with a red card in stoppage time, capping off a tumultuous evening for the South American team. Bielsa’s anger was evident after the match, compounded by ongoing reports of internal conflicts within the squad.

The 70-year-old coach, appointed in 2023, is now expected to leave his position after what has been a largely disappointing period at the helm.

How Uruguay failed to advance past the group stage at the 2022 FIFA World Cup

The disappointment of 2026 mirrored the events of Qatar 2022, where Uruguay also failed to progress beyond the group stage in heartbreaking fashion. Drawn with Portugal, Ghana, and South Korea, La Celeste began slowly, which proved detrimental to their aspirations of reaching the knockout rounds.

Uruguay kicked off their campaign with a goalless draw against South Korea, followed by a 2-0 loss to Portugal. Their final match required a victory to keep their hopes alive. Giorgian de Arrascaeta’s two first-half goals secured a 2-0 win over Ghana, but the earlier results had already set the stage for their exit.

They were relying on outcomes from other matches, but the final Group H match went against them. South Korea overtook La Celeste on goals scored, thanks to Hwang Hee-chan’s stoppage-time goal in their 2-1 win over Portugal. This late twist pushed the South Americans to third place, leading to their first FIFA World Cup group-stage exit since 2002, leaving fans heartbroken.
