Law Enforcement Seizes Database from Cybercriminal Forum LeakBase
U.S. and European law enforcement have made a significant breakthrough in the fight against cybercrime by seizing the database from LeakBase, which prosecutors have described as “one of the world’s largest online forums for cybercriminals.” The site was known for facilitating the sharing of stolen passwords and hacking tools among its members.
The operation, carried out earlier this week, revealed that LeakBase had over 142,000 registered members and more than 215,000 messages exchanged between them. The authorities stated that the forum had been operational since 2021 and maintained an extensive archive of hacked databases containing millions of compromised account credentials, credit card numbers, and banking account information.
This latest takedown is part of a broader effort to combat platforms that deal in stolen credentials, which are commonly used by cybercriminals to infiltrate accounts and steal sensitive data, including cryptocurrency.
Europol announced that approximately 100 enforcement actions were taken worldwide in connection with the operation, with the top 37 active users of the forum facing legal measures. The FBI played a crucial role in the shutdown of the site by redirecting its domain to servers controlled by the agency, effectively halting its operations.
Visitors to LeakBase’s website are now greeted with a seizure notice, informing them that the forum’s contents, private messages, and IP address logs have been retained. According to reports, the investigation resulted in the arrest of over 13 individuals, as well as searches and interviews of 33 suspects, culminating in the seizure of the entire database.
