Washington:

The Federal Aviation Administration announced on Tuesday that it will be extending the restrictions on commercial airlines flying over Iraq for US flights for another three years due to safety concerns.

The decision to prolong the ban on flying below specific altitudes until October 2027 is based on the potential risks posed by activities of Iranian-aligned militia groups and ongoing military operations by third parties. The restrictions also impact foreign operators who operate code share flights for US carriers. In a recent development, the US Transportation Department imposed a fine of $250,000 on Air Canada for violating the airspace restrictions by flying over Iraq in 2022 and 2023.
