The recent arrests of five hackers, including British national Kai West, have brought to light a major cybercrime operation that targeted numerous victims and caused over $25 million in damages. West, also known as IntelBroker, is accused of leading a hacking group called CyberN[——] and engaging in a years-long hacking scheme that targeted a telecoms company, a municipal healthcare provider, and an Internet service provider.

One of the most alarming allegations against West is his attempt to sell sensitive patient information from the healthcare provider, including personal details like names, Social Security numbers, and health plan information. The DOJ’s indictment of West also revealed that he was a member of BreachForums, a notorious internet forum that was previously shut down by international law enforcement agencies in 2023 and 2024.

West was arrested in France in February and is facing extradition to the United States. Additionally, four other individuals believed to be part of the CyberN[——] group were also arrested in France earlier this week. Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau confirmed that these individuals were suspected of running BreachForums and being associated with a collective known as “ShinyHunters.”

BreachForums was a hub for cybercriminals to buy and sell hacking tools and trade stolen data from companies like 23andMe. The site was initially seized and shut down by U.S. federal authorities in 2023, but it resurfaced before being taken down again in 2024.

West faces multiple charges, including conspiracy to commit computer intrusions, wire fraud, and accessing a protected computer to obtain information. The investigation into this cybercrime operation highlights the ongoing threat posed by hackers and the importance of international cooperation in combating cybercrime.
