A U.S. Government Website Hosting AI-Generated Spam
A U.S. government website aimed at providing information about vaccines has recently fallen victim to a cyber attack, resulting in the site being defaced and now displaying AI-generated spam content.
The affected domain is owned by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and has been found to contain mostly LGBTQ+ and gay-themed posts since at least May 12, as per an archived version of the site.
The motive behind this defacement remains unclear, other than the obvious intention of promoting AI-generated spam. It is not the first instance of official U.S. government websites being compromised for illicit purposes such as hosting scam ads and hacking services.
According to a report by 404 Media, the HHS website is part of a larger spam operation involving websites belonging to NPR, Nvidia, and Stanford University. These websites redirect users to a “nonsense SEO spam page” hosted on wowlazy.com.
Despite the severity of the situation, HHS has not yet responded to inquiries regarding the incident.
