Your guide to what Trump’s second term means for Washington, business, and the world

The FBI has made a shocking arrest of a local judge in Wisconsin on obstruction charges for allegedly aiding an immigrant in evading detention by federal agents, US authorities revealed. Judge Hannah Dugan was arrested by FBI agents on Friday morning at a Milwaukee courthouse, as confirmed by a US Marshals spokesperson.

FBI Director Kash Patel accused Judge Dugan of intentionally misdirecting federal agents away from the individual to be arrested in her courthouse in a post on X. Patel expressed gratitude that the perpetrator was ultimately apprehended but highlighted that the judge’s actions had heightened the danger to the public.

The arrest of Judge Dugan, who has served as a judge in Milwaukee County since 2016, handling cases primarily in the court’s misdemeanor section, has sparked unprecedented tensions between Donald Trump’s administration and the judiciary. This move underscores the ongoing struggle to define the boundaries of the executive branch’s authority, raising concerns about the country’s separation of powers.

President Trump and his allies have been at odds with the judiciary, particularly after several court rulings halted White House initiatives deemed unlawful, ranging from immigration policies to government staff terminations. With Congress taking a backseat, the courts have emerged as the primary battleground for evaluating the legality of Trump’s executive orders since his reinstatement in January.

The case revolves around Eduardo Flores-Ruiz, a Mexican national accused by the FBI of re-entering the US unlawfully after being deported previously. Flores-Ruiz, aged 30, faced three counts of domestic abuse and appeared before Judge Dugan on April 18. Immigration authorities had issued an arrest warrant for him a day earlier.

Law enforcement officers stationed outside Dugan’s courtroom awaited Flores-Ruiz, but the situation took a bizarre turn when the judge allegedly expressed anger and escorted the individual and his counsel out of the courthouse through an unconventional exit. Following a foot chase, agents successfully detained Flores-Ruiz outside the building. While Flores-Ruiz’s lawyer declined to comment, Dugan was released pending arraignment next month.

In a statement released by Dugan’s legal representative, she affirmed her commitment to upholding the rule of law and due process throughout her legal and judicial career. The statement also expressed Dugan’s determination to vigorously defend herself and anticipated exoneration.

The case underscores Trump’s hardline stance on immigration, with a focus on mass deportations and crackdown on so-called sanctuary cities. The administration’s legal battles over deporting alleged members of a Venezuelan gang to El Salvador have further fueled the immigration debate, with federal judges scrutinizing the government’s actions and holding it accountable for any lapses.

Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson clarified the city’s stance on immigration, emphasizing that while Milwaukee is not designated as a sanctuary city, it refrains from seeking individuals’ immigration status or collaborating with immigration enforcement agencies to avoid drawing unwanted attention from the Trump administration.

The ongoing legal saga surrounding immigration policies highlights the complex interplay between the executive branch, judiciary, and the rule of law, underscoring the critical role of the courts in upholding constitutional principles and safeguarding individual rights.
