In a striking intersection of global politics and diplomacy, Colombian President Gustavo Petro found himself at the center of controversy following his participation in a pro-Palestinian protest outside the United Nations headquarters. This event, which was openly shared on social media, led to the U.S. State Department’s declaration on September 26 to revoke Petro’s visa after he audaciously encouraged U.S. soldiers to defy their orders.

The State Department, not known for its leniency when it comes to defiance of authority, issued a statement on X, saying, “Earlier today, Colombian president @petrogustavo stood on a NYC street and urged U.S. soldiers to disobey orders and incite violence.” The department characterized Petro’s actions as “reckless and incendiary” without delving deeply into the particulars of the incident.

This disruption occurred while Petro was in New York to attend the United Nations General Assembly, although his current status in New York remains uncertain. His office circulated videos showing him addressing gatherings of demonstrators supporting Palestine, where he implored U.S. soldiers, “Do not point your guns at the people. Disobey [President Donald] Trump’s orders. Obey the orders of humanity.” Notably, the videos did not portray any soldiers, possibly suggesting either a lack of audience or a rather theatrical appeal.

In the backdrop of these events, Petro made headlines during his UN address, pushing for the establishment of “a powerful army” to protect Palestinian territories amidst the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, which has escalated dramatically following Hamas’s terrorist attack on October 7, 2023. He lamented the failure of diplomatic efforts and called for a unity of nations to rise against what he termed genocide, addressing the global community with a plea to support Palestine militarily.

President Trump, eager to express a contrasting stance, announced on September 26 that “intense negotiations” are underway regarding the situation in Gaza, suggesting a renewed hope for peace. According to Trump, “There is more Goodwill and Enthusiasm for getting a Deal done, after so many decades, than I have ever seen before,” aiming to invigorate an exhausted regional outlook on conflict resolution.

The diplomatic tension between the United States and Colombia is palpable, having escalated in recent months. Colombia halted weapons purchases from the U.S. after Trump’s administration labeled it, along with several other nations, as having “failed demonstrably” in the international counter-narcotics arena. This diplomatic rift reached a peak in July when the U.S. recalled its ambassador due to what it described as “baseless and reprehensible statements” by the Colombian government concerning matters critical to their bilateral relations.
