Brie Ruais is a contemporary artist whose work explores the relationship between the human body and the natural world through the medium of ceramics. Using 130 pounds of soft clay, Ruais sculpts radial forms that capture her body’s movement and proportions, creating textured wall works that freeze an imprint of her physical presence. The glazes she uses, in deep charcoal, blue, beige, and rose, evoke the elements of earth, water, air, and fire.

Recently, Ruais has been inspired by the high frontal winds in New Mexico, where she recently moved from New York. These winds, which can reach up to 50 miles per hour, have pushed her into a new series of work that will be on view at albertz benda next month. The new series, titled “Bone Dice,” takes its name from a poem by Louise Glück and explores themes of vulnerability, chance, and desire.

Ruais’s sculptures are characterized by long, sweeping gestures that evoke wind and waves. Pieces like “Gesturing for Her to Follow (130lbs times two)” and “Holding the Space Between Two Waves, High Tide (130lbs Cut from Low Tide)” feature radial shapes with crescent-shaped curves, glazed in shades from navy to sky blue. These forms echo the phases of the moon, reflecting Ruais’s interest in celestial bodies.

The artist’s work is deeply rooted in her concern for the environment and her belief in the interconnectedness of all living things. By fusing elements of the earth, water, and sky in her sculptures, Ruais creates tangible records of the ways in which each of these elements informs and influences the others. “Bone Dice” will be on view at albertz benda from September 5 to October 12 in New York.
