Smartphone Use on the Toilet Linked to Increased Risk of Hemorrhoids

Reading on the toilet is a common habit for many people, but the excessive use of smartphones while on the ceramic throne may be leading to serious health risks. A recent survey has revealed that individuals who use their phones on the toilet are exposed to a 46 percent higher risk for hemorrhoids – swollen veins in the lower rectum caused by excessive pressure.

The study, presented at the Digestive Diseases Week (DDW) conference in San Diego, CA, involved 125 participants undergoing a colonoscopy. More than 40 percent of them had hemorrhoids, and a staggering 93 percent admitted to using their phones on the toilet at least once a week. Interestingly, factors such as age, sex, body mass, exercise, and fiber intake did not influence the results.

Among the participants, about half reported reading news, 44 percent were on social media, and 30 percent were emailing or texting while on the toilet. Many participants admitted to spending more than 6 minutes on the toilet per visit, with a majority attributing their extended toilet time to smartphone use.

While this survey highlights a correlation between smartphone use on the toilet and hemorrhoids, further research is needed to determine if there is a direct causal link. Hemorrhoids are a common condition in the United States, leading to nearly 4 million doctor and emergency department visits annually. However, the exact causes of hemorrhoids remain poorly understood, with only hypotheses to explain their occurrence.

Hemorrhoids are clusters of blood vessels, smooth muscle, and connective tissue in and around the lower rectum. While everyone has these cushions to facilitate bowel movements, they can become swollen and painful when under strain. Prolonged sitting, overstraining, and frequent bowel movements are believed to contribute to the development of hemorrhoids.

Some health experts recommend limiting toilet time to prevent the risk of hemorrhoids. Spending more than 10 minutes on the toilet is advised against, with some experts suggesting a maximum of 3 minutes. A previous study of patients with hemorrhoids found that prolonged toilet reading was linked to the condition.

In light of these findings, it may be prudent to consider designating the bathroom as a smartphone-free zone to avoid distractions and potential health risks. Ultimately, maintaining good toilet hygiene and prioritizing the task at hand over smartphone use is essential for overall well-being.

The latest survey on smartphone use and hemorrhoids was presented at Digestive Diseases Week (DDW) 2025, highlighting the importance of addressing this modern health concern.

The world of technology is constantly evolving, with new innovations and advancements being made every day. From artificial intelligence to virtual reality, there is no shortage of exciting developments in the tech industry. One of the most recent and groundbreaking advancements in technology is the use of blockchain technology.

Blockchain technology is a decentralized, distributed ledger system that allows for secure and transparent transactions to take place without the need for intermediaries. This technology is most commonly associated with cryptocurrencies, such as Bitcoin, but its applications extend far beyond just digital currencies.

One of the key features of blockchain technology is its ability to create a secure and tamper-proof record of transactions. Each transaction is recorded in a block, which is then linked to the previous block, creating a chain of blocks. This makes it nearly impossible for anyone to alter or delete a transaction once it has been added to the blockchain.

This level of security and transparency has made blockchain technology a popular choice for industries such as finance, healthcare, and supply chain management. In the finance industry, blockchain technology is being used to streamline processes such as cross-border payments and securities trading, reducing the time and cost associated with these transactions.

In the healthcare industry, blockchain technology is being used to securely store and share patient records, ensuring that sensitive information remains private and secure. This technology is also being used to track the provenance of pharmaceuticals, reducing the risk of counterfeit drugs entering the market.

In the supply chain management industry, blockchain technology is being used to track the movement of goods from manufacturer to consumer, providing a transparent and secure record of each step in the supply chain. This helps to reduce the risk of fraud and theft, as well as improve efficiency and traceability.

Overall, blockchain technology has the potential to revolutionize the way we conduct transactions and share information. Its secure and transparent nature makes it an attractive option for industries looking to improve security and efficiency in their operations. As this technology continues to evolve and expand, we can expect to see even more innovative applications and advancements in the years to come.
