A Utah man was arrested on Friday night as he attempted to cross into Manhattan via the Lincoln Tunnel after making threatening posts on social media targeting New York City synagogues. Luis Ramirez, 23, was apprehended by Port Authority police in New Jersey following reports of antisemitic posts on his X account.

Ramirez had mentioned Central Synagogue on Lexington Avenue in Midtown Manhattan in one of his posts, prompting the NYPD to take action. The Community Security Initiative, a program aimed at enhancing security for Jewish institutions, worked with law enforcement to notify synagogues across the city about the threats.

Authorities were alerted to Ramirez’s plans to travel to New York City from out of state, leading to his arrest before he could reach Manhattan. Despite having no prior criminal record, Ramirez was reportedly found in possession of a firearm during a stop earlier in Kansas City. However, no weapons were found in his car when he was stopped outside the Lincoln Tunnel.

As the investigation continues, no charges have been filed against Ramirez. He is currently being held at the Hudson County Correctional Center in Kearny and is expected to be arraigned on Saturday. The seriousness of the threats made by Ramirez has raised concerns about the safety and security of religious institutions in the city.

The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance and cooperation between law enforcement and community organizations in safeguarding against acts of hate and violence. It also highlights the need for continued efforts to combat antisemitism and ensure the safety of all individuals, regardless of their religious beliefs.
