Alessandro Michele and Simplicity: A New Chapter at Valentino

In the world of high fashion, Alessandro Michele and simplicity seem like unlikely bedfellows. Michele, known for his intricate and eclectic designs, has often taken the road less traveled when it comes to creating fashion. His tenure at Valentino has been met with both praise and criticism, as he injects his unique flair into a brand known for its classic elegance.

During a recent Zoom call previewing the pre-fall collection, Michele reflected on his approach to design. “The word ‘elegance’… it holds little meaning for me,” he mused. “I’ve never been an ‘elegant’ designer in the canonical sense. In the eyes of many, I’m probably the least elegant person around. And yet I’m fascinated by this almost mythological word that has shaped generations, including my own.”

The latest collection from Valentino is a departure from Michele’s usual flamboyance. The lookbook features a more restrained aesthetic, with pared-down styling and a focus on classic silhouettes. Michele draws inspiration from Valentino’s ’80s and ’90s heyday, incorporating boxy shoulders, bold color-blocks, and luxurious textures.

Even the menswear in the collection shows a sense of refinement and restraint, with soft-tailored suits in muted tones exuding a debonair swagger. Michele’s signature irreverence shines through with unexpected details like lace lingerie peeking out from beneath leather bombers and miniskirts worn with razor-sharp jackets topped with contrasting pussy bows.

One unexpected twist in the collection is a pair of Rockstud flip-flops, a nod to Valentino’s iconic shoe line. Michele had been working on a new version of the Rockstud when he saw a similar pair in the trailer for The Devil Wears Prada 2. Despite the coincidence, Michele decided to keep his version in the collection, embracing the unexpected connection.

As Michele continues to evolve his creative vision at Valentino, he is exploring the idea of emptiness and absence as a form of ornamentation. He sees beauty in what is removed, allowing what remains to speak for itself. This introspective approach to design is a departure from his previous maximalist tendencies, creating a more harmonious balance between his own aesthetic and the legacy of the Valentino brand.

Ultimately, Michele’s goal is to find a happy medium between his bold creativity and the timeless elegance of Valentino. He believes that by embracing a sense of irreverence and discomfort in just the right measure, he can allow the brand to breathe and evolve in a new direction. As he navigates the delicate balance between tradition and innovation, Michele remains inspired by the audacity and fearlessness of Mr. Valentino himself, finding joy in the fearless pursuit of beauty.
