Valmet, a leading Finnish company, is gearing up to initiate change negotiations in Finland in line with the Finnish Co-operation Act. This move comes as part of a strategic plan to tackle a decrease in workload within the organization.

The negotiations are expected to impact around 2,400 employees spread across various locations and business segments. These include divisions within the packaging and paper, pulp, energy and circularity sectors, as well as specific functions and the global supply unit.

Among the proposed measures are temporary layoffs lasting less than 90 days, which are slated to be implemented between June 2026 and the end of December 2026. Valmet emphasized that these actions are crucial to ensuring profitability and competitiveness by aligning capacity with the current lower-than-expected workload. Factors contributing to this situation include project delays driven by customers, sluggish demand in paper and board machine markets, and a soft biomaterials services market.

It is estimated that these measures could lead to cost savings of approximately €8m ($9.36m) in 2026. The final details regarding the timing and extent of these actions will be finalized during the negotiation process.

Valmet, which boasts a global workforce of 18,500 individuals, including 5,900 in Finland, has been actively pursuing restructuring initiatives in its international manufacturing operations. In the recent past, the company initiated talks regarding the potential closure of its Sundsvall site in Sweden, alongside restructuring efforts at its Gothenburg facility and the Jelenia Góra site in Poland. These actions could potentially impact up to 170 positions in Sundsvall, 55 roles in Gothenburg, and 130 jobs in Jelenia Góra as Valmet continues to optimize its global capacity.
