As podcasting transforms into a vital channel for business news and industry insights, Variety has introduced a Monday through Thursday audio series that revives the essence of the brand’s iconic “Daily Variety” title.
The series is led by Cynthia Littleton, Co-Editor in Chief at Variety. “Daily Variety” delivers concise morning updates on essential business news, along with in-depth discussions featuring Variety reporters and industry influencers on contemporary issues and trends in the global content market. Each episode of “Daily Variety” lasts 20 minutes or less and is typically released by 10 a.m. PT on most weekdays.
“The vision for ‘Daily Variety’ is to cater to entertainment sector professionals with a tailored update featuring news that resonates with people engaged in television, film, music, gaming, podcasting, AI, and other related fields,” explained Littleton. “We are thrilled to provide a dynamic platform that showcases the vital reporting carried out by Variety journalists worldwide. Furthermore, it serves as a centralized hub for all things Variety, highlighting our editorial content, events, conferences, and the array of annual live productions we create.”
For 80 years, from 1933 to 2013, the Hollywood-based Daily Variety was a staple Monday to Friday print publication that was essential reading for everyone in the entertainment industry, from corporate leaders to aspiring filmmakers in entry-level positions. During a different era of communication, the arrival of each day’s Daily Variety was a vital signal of daily news updates impacting the key players in major networks, studios, music labels, creative talent, agencies, guilds, law firms, and more. Daily Variety embodied a punchy newspaper style typical of its time, combining irreverent humor with sharp headlines while maintaining an authoritative voice on significant industry developments.
In the last ten years, podcasting has risen as a crucial medium for business-to-business and audience engagement. Variety has broadened its audio presence with weekly offerings like “Awards Circuit,” “Strictly Business,” “Just for Variety,” and “Stagecraft,” in addition to the detailed documentary series “Variety Confidential.” This summer, the latest season of “Variety Confidential,” hosted by Variety executive editor Tatiana Siegel, ranked among the top 10 iHeart Media Podcasts, featuring a four-part examination of “The Life and Legacy of River Phoenix.”
When contemplating the name for a Variety daily news podcast, one name stood out.
“I felt honored to be part of the masthead during the last two decades of Daily Variety’s print journey. We are eager to revive its spirit in this vibrant new format. Episodes of ‘Daily Variety’ primarily serve as a platform for our exceptionally talented and hardworking journalists. Podcasting is an engaging way to allow listeners to witness our newsgathering process and hear directly from our on-the-ground reporters,” commented Littleton.
You can listen to episodes of “Daily Variety” on iHeartMedia, Spotify, YouTube, Apple Podcasts, Amazon Music, and other leading audio platforms.
