An anonymous individual with homophobic views recently sent a disturbing email to Marta Xargay Casademont, the wife of WNBA superstar Breanna Stewart. The email contained hateful language and included threats towards Casademont, stating, “I hope someone shoots your wife dead, f–k you d—es [sic], I hope you both die.” This is not the first time Casademont has received such a message, as the email was traced back to an Internet address known for sending death threats, bomb threats, and other forms of hate speech.
Casademont, a former professional basketball player from Spain who won a silver medal at the 2016 Summer Olympics with the Spanish national team, reported the email to the NYPD’s 78th Precinct in Brooklyn. The couple, who got married in July 2021, have two children together.
Despite the disturbing incident, the New York Liberty, Stewart’s team, did not provide any comment on the matter. The Liberty are currently competing in the WNBA Finals against the Minnesota Lynx, with the series tied at one game each.
Stewart, a prominent figure in the WNBA, has been vocal about supporting the LGBTQ+ community and advocating for equality. The couple has been a target of online harassment and threats in the past, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by LGBTQ+ individuals in sports and society.
As the investigation into the hateful email continues, it serves as a stark reminder of the importance of standing against discrimination and hate in all its forms. The basketball community, fans, and allies have rallied behind Stewart and Casademont, showing solidarity and support in the face of intolerance.
