Man Charged with Attempted Murder after Shooting Incident in West Side Alley
Prosecutors have filed charges against a man who allegedly shot and paralyzed another man in a West Side alley over the weekend, unaware that a veteran Chicago police officer was looking at him from just yards away.
As CWBChicago reported shortly after the midday shooting on Saturday, the cop immediately chased the gunman and took him into custody about a minute later. Now, Jacob Riley, 18, of Bellwood, is charged with attempted murder.
Around 11 a.m., the officer, listed in public records as a 57-year-old man with nearly 33 years on the force, reported via radio that he had just seen a shooting unfold in an alley behind the 200 block of South Cicero.
Riley had shot an 18-year-old man in the back, causing the victim to collapse to the pavement, prosecutors said. The veteran officer said he saw Riley approach the face-down victim and shoot him again at close range.
Officials said the victim, who lives in Old Town, suffered two gunshot wounds to his back, a graze wound to his head, and a gunshot that broke his left arm. A bullet struck his spine, and he is expected to remain paralyzed, prosecutors stated during Riley’s detention hearing.
The officer arrested Riley in an alley behind the 4800 block of West Jackson within minutes. Prosecutors said Riley dropped a chrome 9-millimeter handgun, which was in slide-lock position, indicating all bullets had been fired.
Judge Antara Rivera detained Riley.
