The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has unveiled an innovative strategy to encourage illegal immigrants to voluntarily leave the country, all while simultaneously conserving taxpayer funds.
As Bill Melugin of Fox News highlighted this morning, the DHS will begin funding commercial flights for those who opt for self-deportation. Additionally, once these individuals have successfully left the U.S., they will receive a $1,000 bonus from the government.
To be part of this initiative, undocumented immigrants are required to register through the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) border app and submit their intent to depart. Furthermore, those who choose to self-deport will retain the option to return to the United States in the future, provided they follow legal immigration channels.
Melugin notes that the DHS has informed Fox News that this program could lead to significant savings for American taxpayers. Currently, the expense of detaining, arresting, and deporting an individual exceeds $17,000.
In contrast, if an undocumented immigrant accepts the self-deportation offer, the total cost—including flights and the incentive—will amount to only $4,500 per person. This represents a staggering savings of at least $12,500 or a 70% reduction in costs for taxpayers.
This initiative certainly presents a rather generous opportunity for undocumented individuals to depart the country with a degree of autonomy. They would be wise to consider this offer seriously.
