Victoria Beckham‘s namesake Netflix docuseries is currently available for streaming, offering an intimate look at the journey of the Spice Girl who transitioned to football WAG and then to a fashion powerhouse. This three-part series, directed by “Becoming” filmmaker Nadia Hallgren, provides an inside perspective as Victoria embarks on her most ambitious fashion show yet, reflecting on the highs and lows of her dynamic career.

The series features candid and insightful interviews with Victoria and her husband David Beckham, along with insights from fashion legends like Anna Wintour and Tom Ford. “Victoria Beckham” portrays Posh Spice in a fresh light, shedding her often criticized image and showcasing her humor while sharing her struggles, including battling an eating disorder and the near collapse of her fashion brand.

Below are the nine significant insights revealed in “Victoria Beckham,” now streaming on Netflix.

Growing Up As the ‘Uncool Kid’

Victoria Beckham’s popularity was not always as widespread as it is today.

“I was that awkward kid in school, definitely on the outskirts,” she shares in the docuseries, noting her experiences of being “bullied.” The performing arts became her refuge.

“I felt like I never belonged. But being on stage transformed me; I could escape into someone else, someone I liked better than myself,” she reflects. Despite attending theater school, she faced ongoing scrutiny about her appearance. But landing an audition for the Spice Girls changed everything for her.

Struggling with Motherhood After the Spice Girls

After the Spice Girls disbanded in 2000, Victoria, who had welcomed her son Brooklyn in March 1999, faced a tough adjustment to motherhood while being a devoted wife to footballer David Beckham.

“The end of the Spice Girls was jarring,” she admits. “Going from championing girl power to living in Manchester, friendless and far from family, was hard.”

She recalls, “It felt incredibly slow and isolating. I constantly worried if I’d ever be in front of the camera again. What was I supposed to do next?” Victoria says this period left her feeling self-conscious as she faced negative press. “People saw me as the glum one, and honestly, they were right,” she acknowledges.

Embracing Her WAG Image

Amid media criticism, Victoria embraced her role as a WAG. In 2003, she relocated to Spain with David as he joined Real Madrid, adopting a bold and glamorous wardrobe.

“Looking back at those photos brings a smile, but I recognize there was an element of seeking attention during that time,” she admits. “Creatively unfulfilled, I was searching for my identity and it became my way of staying relevant from Spice Girls to WAG status. It was a confusing and sad period for me.”

Eventually, she turned to fashion. After David’s transfer to LA Galaxy in 2007, she regained confidence and sought a meeting with designer Roland Mouret.

Mouret shared the challenge of her rebranding, stating, “We needed to shed the WAG persona entirely.”

A Hurtful Comment from Mel B

Before Victoria could fully establish her fashion career, the Spice Girls announced a reunion tour in 2008. While it was enjoyable to reconnect, she felt hurt by a comment from Mel B.

“Melanie B told me, ‘Don’t forget where you came from.’ It struck a nerve because I’ve always recognized that Posh Spice is what opened doors for me,” Victoria explains. “Though I may have played that ‘grumpy’ role, I know that Posh actually helped me get here.”

She confides, “While the tour was celebratory, it also validated that being on stage wasn’t where I belonged anymore.”

Victoria decided to evolve, shedding her former self, saying, “I had to strip down those other identities to embark on this new chapter. I discarded the superficial and opted for a more refined version of myself, diving deep into my work.”

Defying Odds in the Fashion Industry

Launching her fashion label was no small feat, especially given her celebrity status without experience. Many were skeptical about her venture.

Tom Ford recalls his surprise, stating, “I wanted to ask, why? This business is incredibly tough. I doubt many took her seriously.”

Acknowledging the difficulties, Victoria asserts, “I knew the odds were against me, yet I focused on my vision.” Despite a slow start, she credits her success to determination, recalling the moment she spotted Madonna in one of her dresses and receiving acclaim from Anna Wintour, who finally attended her show in 2011.

Wintour stated, “Initially, I was skeptical about her venture. Yet, Victoria demonstrated she was a serious contender.”

Candid Reflections on an Eating Disorder

Victoria opens up about her long-standing battle with disordered eating, which escalated after giving birth to Brooklyn.

“At six months postpartum, I was weighed live on television,” she recalls. “The pressure was unbearable, and I was extremely young.”

Struggling with self-perception, she confesses, “I frequently questioned myself: Was I too fat? Too thin? That confusion distorted my reality.”

“The external voices shaped my self-image, leaving me vulnerable and controlling my weight in unhealthy ways. Dishonesty became second nature, especially regarding my struggles,” she explains.

Victoria admits, “The moment a camera appears, the walls go up. I switch into a persona that feels heavy and burdensome, and I wish that wasn’t the case. I crave the confidence to simply smile in public.”

Facing Financial Turmoil

Her fashion brand was gaining recognition but continuously losing money. By 2016, drastic changes were necessary.

“Overspending on unnecessary things led to significant losses. David’s financial contributions were substantial,” she explains, revealing that the public’s perception of her brand’s difficulties embarrassed her.

David candidly shares his concerns, saying, “I was worried and panicked about the lack of returns. It had become unsustainable.”

Victoria reflects on feeling desperate to salvage her hard work, stating, “It was a dark time—I was deeply in debt.”

Eventually, she partnered with David Belhassen of NEO Investment Partners, who candidly noted, “It was a mess. It was harrowing to address the overwhelming losses.”

Belhassen points to a culture of appeasement around her, illustrating how even trivial expenses spiraled. Victoria agrees, accepting accountability for allowing such issues to fester.

Victoria Beckham readying for Paris Fashion Week

“We’re Doing This Show, Rain or Shine”

The series culminates with Victoria’s highly anticipated fashion show during Paris Fashion Week. Despite rental issues and unexpected rain, she remained resolute.

“I’ve worked tirelessly for my place in this industry, and I refuse to lose it,” she exclaims. “No matter what, we’re having this show.”

Fortunately, the rain paused just before the show, but success wasn’t guaranteed. Wintour notes, “Victoria faced a room that was uncertain. There was a lot riding on this.”

The show went off splendidly, featuring Gigi Hadid in a stunning gown. “I felt that night she was on the brink of realizing her aspirations,” Wintour adds.

“I’m Not Done Yet”

Following her triumphant show, Victoria affirmed her relentless drive in the docuseries’ concluding moments. David inquires about her incessant need to prove herself, asking why she can’t accept her successes.

“After all these years of struggle, I feel a chance like never before, and I won’t let it pass,” she responds.

Victoria admits, “Part of it is to you, David. I’m aware of the times I had to lean on you.”

“You have my unwavering support, but you never need to prove yourself,” he reassures her. Yet, she expresses a longing for his pride as they reflect on their journey.

“When I saw your and the kids’ expressions backstage after the last show, it was a pivotal moment. I could truly see your pride in me,” she shares.

“Even if you just made grilled cheese, we’d be proud of you,” David responds humorously, with a playful exchange about her cooking skills.

Victoria concludes, “Success is fulfilling. I’m unabashedly ambitious, and I have much left to accomplish. This journey is far from over.”
