Armed robbers struck in the early hours of Saturday morning, kidnapping a man in front of his West Side home and forcing him to withdraw money from an ATM. The terrifying abduction, captured on video by a Ring camera, is just one of several similar incidents reported in the area around the same time.
The victim, arriving at a residence in the 800 block of North Parkside via Uber at around 2:22 a.m., was ambushed by two gunmen as he exited his rideshare. A dark-colored SUV pulled up behind him, and the armed men confronted him as he attempted to enter his gated home.
The robbers proceeded to search the victim’s pockets for valuables, with one of them demanding access to his phone. After struggling for about 40 seconds to withdraw money from the victim’s accounts, the assailants forced him into their vehicle and drove off, out of the camera’s view.
According to the victim, there were two additional robbers inside the black Jeep. The traumatized individual recounted the harrowing experience on social media, expressing gratitude for escaping with his life by complying with the robbers’ demands.
Chicago police confirmed that the 39-year-old victim was coerced into the back seat of the SUV, where he was struck with a firearm while being forced to withdraw cash from an ATM on North Cicero Avenue. The robbers seized approximately $700, along with the victim’s iPhone and wallet, before abandoning him at the ATM.
Authorities are investigating at least three other robberies involving a similar group of suspects traveling in a stolen black Jeep Grand Cherokee. These incidents occurred near Grand and Kostner, outside a nightclub on West 26th Street, and in the 4800 block of West Congress.
The victim’s ordeal serves as a stark reminder of the dangers lurking in the city’s streets, prompting heightened vigilance among residents and law enforcement. The community must remain united in the face of such brazen criminal acts, supporting efforts to ensure safety and security for all.
