City officials have recently made public video footage and other materials related to the fatal shooting of a man by Chicago police officers in the West Ridge area last month. The incident, which occurred on December 9 around 10:25 p.m., began with two officers responding to a call regarding a stolen vehicle in the 5700 block of North Washtenaw Avenue.

According to the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA), the officers observed a dark-colored sedan pull up beside the stolen vehicle, with two individuals trying to enter the stolen car. Upon approaching the suspects and instructing them to halt, one suspect fled on foot while the other individual, identified as 20-year-old Roberto Calvario, jumped into the driver’s seat of the sedan they had arrived in. A scuffle between an officer and Calvario ensued, leading to the officer firing his weapon as Calvario attempted to drive away, ultimately striking him.

Despite being briefly dragged by the vehicle, the officer managed to fire his weapon, causing the car to crash into an unoccupied parked vehicle. Sadly, Calvario succumbed to his injuries at a hospital, while the officer was reported to be in stable condition following the altercation. Two firearms were recovered by the police at the scene.

Court records reveal that Calvario had previously received a three-year prison sentence in March 2025 for charges related to possessing a stolen motor vehicle and unlawfully possessing a firearm.

In the body-worn camera footage released by COPA, officers can be seen retrieving a firearm from Calvario’s front waistband after he was pulled from the vehicle, fatally wounded. Additionally, the footage depicts a woman in the passenger seat next to Calvario at the time of the shooting, though she did not appear to sustain any physical injuries.

COPA is actively investigating the incident from a departmental policy perspective. For those interested, all materials, including full videos, released by COPA are accessible on the agency’s website.
