Indian streaming giant JioHotstar recently made a groundbreaking commitment of INR4,000 crore ($445 million) to support South India’s creative economy over the next five years. This announcement was made at a star-studded event in Chennai, attended by Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin and renowned South cinema personalities including Kamal Haasan, Mohanlal, and Nagarjuna.

The investment pledge was accompanied by the unveiling of 25 new titles, which include originals, franchises, and films. Some of the highly anticipated series include “Kaattaan” starring Vijay Sethupathi and “Pharma” featuring Nivin Pauly. Additionally, a letter of intent was signed with the Government of Tamil Nadu to enhance the state’s creative and production ecosystem.

This commitment marks one of the largest investments in regional Indian content by a streaming platform, with plans to release 1,500 hours of fresh South programming in the next 12 months. With a current user base of 400 million and coverage across all of India’s post codes, JioHotstar aims to cater to a diverse audience.

He highlighted the influx of talented creators, directors, and showrunners who have joined the platform in the last ten months, each bringing a unique voice to the table.
