Vice President JD Vance expressed disdain for liberals who support birthright citizenship. The 41-year-old politician aligned himself with President Donald Trump’s opposition to granting citizenship to children of undocumented immigrants, a stance taken in anticipation of a Supreme Court decision. Vance’s position against this constitutional right sparked significant backlash, with critics labeling him a “vile human being,” RadarOnline.com reports.
During an appearance on The Michael Knowles Show, Vance commended the president for influencing public opinion on a cultural issue. He remarked that “thanks to Donald Trump,” Americans have moved beyond displaying signs outside their homes to proclaim their social beliefs. Vance derided what he called “those hideous signs in their yard that say, ‘in this house we believe blah blah blah blah blah. You know, love is love, science is science, whatever. No person is illegal.'” This comment drew criticism from some who were tired of what they perceived as Vance’s harshness. One individual commented, “What a nasty, partisan, resentful man. I will never vote for him.” Another added, “He is such a dud. LOL.”
Vance further criticized these signs by stating, “That sign is such a disgusting butchering of the Nicene Creed.” The Nicene Creed is a statement of faith associated with various Christian denominations, including Catholicism, a faith to which Vance has converted. However, his remarks on religious matters were not well-received by all. Critics often accuse Vance of contradicting the teachings of his church and the pope. One person on X succinctly remarked, “Converts, man.” Another person commented, “Vance pretending he knows anything is a disgusting butchering of knowing anything.” A third stated, “Buddy learned what the Nicene Creed is like a year or two ago at most.” Another critic wrote, “Bro. No one that made those signs was even thinking about the Nicene Creed and probably isn’t even familiar with it. So now anything that says ‘I believe in X,Y, Z’ is biting the creed? FOH. You just don’t like the ideas put forward by that slogan.” A fifth person added, “Those signs are exactly what I learned from the Sisters of Mercy & Dominicans who taught in my Catholic schools. They also express what Pope Leo is saying now. Vance has no authority, beyond his own petty narcissism, to speak on the Nicene Creed or any other Catholic doctrine.”
Some observers questioned whether Vance’s statements truly reflected his views, pointing to a post he made in 2023. On June 25, 2023, the Republican shared on X, “In This House We Believe Black Lives Matter No Human is Illegal Prigozhin is a Liberal Reformer Love is Love.” This past post seemed to contrast sharply with the positions he currently supports. He even followed up with a comment, “Everyone update their signs.”
One online user pleaded, “Can this Catholicism larp from JD end already?” Vance has found himself at odds with the current pope, who is regarded as the highest authority in the Catholic faith. Pope Leo publicly condemned violence and described the Trump administration’s mass deportations as “inhuman.” In response, Vance cautioned Pope Leo to be “careful” when discussing theological matters. During a recent appearance on Fox News, Vance stated, “I do think that some of the things that have come out of the Vatican on the immigration question in particular have been troubling, and ultimately I disagree with it.”
