Nestled within the picturesque Garvan Woodland Gardens in southwest Arkansas lies a remarkable four-story communal treehouse known as the Evans Children’s Adventure Garden. This enchanting structure, designed by modus studio and completed in 2018, offers visitors a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in nature through elevated walkways and lookout points, surrounded by towering pine and oak trees.

The inspiration behind this whimsical yet contemporary treehouse stems from the team’s childhood experiences in the region. They recognized the importance of reconnecting children with the natural world, which is often overlooked in today’s modern society. The treehouse serves as a gateway to the wonders of the outdoors, encouraging visitors to explore and appreciate the beauty of the surrounding Ouachita Forest.

Constructed with 113 fins made from locally sourced Southern yellow pine, the treehouse features a curving screen that mimics the branches of the surrounding trees. This design allows light and air to filter through, creating a seamless connection between the structure and its natural environment. The intricate passageways and stairwells within the treehouse are inspired by dendrology, emphasizing the interaction between visitors and the woodland landscape.

The treehouse’s purpose is to stimulate the mind and body, fostering a deeper connection with nature and encouraging exploration and play. By offering various vantage points and perspectives of the canopy, visitors are invited to climb higher and see farther, providing a unique and immersive experience that celebrates the beauty of the outdoors.

In addition to the Evans Children’s Adventure Garden, modus studio has been selected to exhibit at the prestigious U.S. Pavilion at the 2025 Venice Architecture Biennale. Their commitment to innovative and sustainable design can also be seen in projects like the Coler Mountain Bike Preserve, where they have created a series of pavilions and dynamic bridges that blend seamlessly with the natural landscape.
