This summer, I made a delightful switch from mozzarella to feta and set off for a blissful ten-day escape to the stunning Aegean islands. What I discovered was that the serene Cyclades islands I had on my list for late August were a haven for many fellow Italians, seeking to escape the bustling beaches of Liguria and Campania. The moment I arrived, I felt an immediate sense of belonging.
My itinerary included Sifnos and Serifos, and I maintained a flexible schedule to encourage spontaneous adventures—filling my Smythson notebook with insightful recommendations from trusted sources. Our lifestyle editor, Elly Leavitt, who is Greek by birth and has spent ample time in New York, effortlessly played the role of my travel consultant. She answered all my inquiries (yes, the ferry is manageable, and yes, a car is needed). With her help, I created an interactive Google Map for my boyfriend and me to mark hidden gems and serendipitous finds along the way.
We dedicated a day to exploring Athens, followed by six days in Sifnos, two in Serifos, and then another two back in Athens. If given the chance to do it all again (which I fully intend to), I would extend my stay on these enchanting islands, sacrificing a bit of time in the city—not because I didn’t enjoy Athens, but because stepping off the ferry at Piraeus abruptly interrupted the sweet, carefree vibe of vacation.
Below, I’m sharing all my travel essentials, indulgences, and souvenirs that I brought back to bustling New York City after an unforgettable week of island-hopping in Greece.
