Walgreens is making significant changes to its store footprint in Denver and across the country.
According to the location’s phone system, the Walgreens at the intersection of Havana Street and Colfax Avenue in Aurora will close on Nov. 13. The following day, the Walgreens at 300 S. Federal Blvd. in Denver’s Westwood neighborhood will also shut its doors. Additionally, another store at the corner of Colfax and Sheridan Boulevard will be closing next month.
During an earnings call, Walgreens, based in Illinois, announced plans to close 1,200 stores, accounting for about 14 percent of its locations. CEO Tim Wentworth attributed the decision to an unsustainable business model and decreased consumer spending. Approximately 500 stores are expected to close within the next year, although specific locations have not been disclosed.
Denverite and Denver7 were the first to report on the closures in Westwood and Aurora. The 1,200-store closure figure is an update from the initial announcement over the summer, where Walgreens stated that 25 percent of its stores would be shuttered.
In recent months, at least two Walgreens stores in the region have already closed. For example, the former store at 110 E. Mineral St. in Littleton now directs calls to a store in Centennial. Moreover, a former Walgreens property at 3080 S. Broadway in Englewood is currently listed for sale or lease on LoopNet.
