Walmart (WMT) is set to establish a $300 million fulfillment center in North Carolina, which will primarily handle the distribution of large items such as patio furniture and lawnmowers directly to customers, potentially as soon as the following day, announced North Carolina Governor Josh Stein on Tuesday.
The sprawling facility, covering 1.2 million square feet, will be situated in Kings Mountain, close to Gastonia, and is projected to commence operations in 2027, according to a news release from the Department of Commerce.
“Our e-commerce operations are on the rise, and this new fulfillment center is crucial for enhancing our ability to serve customers promptly,” stated Karisa Sprague, senior vice president of supply chain at Walmart U.S.
Walmart (NYSE: WMT) currently runs over 214 stores and Sam’s Clubs across North Carolina and operates seven distribution centers. The upcoming facility is anticipated to create approximately 300 jobs.
The Commerce Department plans to provide a job development grant totaling $4 million over 12 years, conditional on Walmart fulfilling its job creation commitments.
Walmart boasts 29 dedicated e-commerce fulfillment centers, as revealed in its most recent annual report.
A new “next-generation” fulfillment center is also scheduled to open in Stockton, California, next year to enhance service for online orders in the West Coast region.
