Art Movements, published every Thursday afternoon, is a summary of essential news, appointments, awards, and other events in today’s vibrant art world.

78 Organizations Receive Warhol Foundation Grants

In the spring 2026 grant cycle, the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts awarded $5,166,000 to 78 museums, university art galleries, and other institutions across 26 states and internationally. For the first time, the foundation introduced a “Project Grants for Small-Scale Organizations” category, supporting artists’ projects at venues with annual budgets under $200,000. Among the recipients is the Golden Dome nonprofit in Los Angeles, which plans to use the funds to create a garden aligning with celestial bodies through ancient alchemy principles.

The Philadelphia Museum of Art (PMA) has appointed Jennifer Thompson as the deputy director of Collections and Exhibitions. Her responsibilities include overseeing registration, installation, packing, and photography of art. Thompson’s career at the PMA began in 2001 as a research assistant and curatorial fellow before advancing to curator of European art. Her appointment is one of several recent staffing changes following the museum’s rebranding from a contentious, short-lived name change.

Acquisitions

The Colby College Museum of Art in Waterville, Maine, has acquired a rare and significant work by Henri Matisse. The piece, “Océanie, le ciel” (1946/48), is a mural-sized screenprint on linen featuring an array of abstract silhouettes like coral and underwater life, capturing the essence of Matisse’s papier découpés or “cut-outs.”

The exhibition Raphael: Sublime Poetry at the Metropolitan Museum of Art attracted an average of 6,800 visitors daily, making it the most attended show at the museum since 2018. The exhibition concluded last month, having drawn over 562,000 visitors in its three-month run. This places it among the top exhibitions of the decade, just behind The Costume Institute’s Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination and Michelangelo: Divine Draftsman and Designer, highlighting the enduring rivalry and fascination with these two Renaissance icons.
