A father’s anguished vow: the man who murdered his 6-year-old son is out on parole after serving just eight years, and the consequences could be dire.
The tragedy unfolded on December 7, 2015, in Versailles, Kentucky, when Ronald Exantus, age 38, invaded the Tipton family’s home under the cover of night.
With no prior ties to the victims, Exantus chose their residence at random, armed with a kitchen knife he found inside. In a horrific series of events, he attacked the sleeping household, inflicting fatal injuries on young Logan Tipton, who was just six years old, as he pleaded for help.
Logan’s father, Dean Tipton, confronted the intruder but suffered injuries himself, as he was violently thrown aside after being stabbed.
The assault didn’t end there; Logan’s sister, Dakota Tipton, was also brutally attacked, suffering stab wounds and further violence. Dakota later described the heart-stopping moment: “He stabbed me in the back. And then stomped on my head. I woke up across the room and saw him killing Logan, while Logan screamed for help.”
During the chaos, Exantus ominously declared his intent to kill every member of the Tipton family.
Following his arrest, Exantus was tried and controversially found not guilty of murder by reason of insanity in 2018, though he was convicted on assault charges and sentenced to 20 years in prison.
However, thanks to good behavior and educational credits, he was granted parole on October 1, just eight years into his sentence—a mere fraction of the time for such a heinous act.
The early release has understandably inflamed the Tipton family’s distress. Dean Tipton expressed his urgent concerns for his family’s safety, saying he feels compelled to remain vigilant. “He told [Dakota] he would kill all of us. Now I must be extra cautious to ensure my kids are safe; I can’t bear to lose another child,” he lamented.

Heather Tipton, Logan’s mother, has echoed the family’s outrage at the judicial system for sentencing Exantus so lightly. “It’s astonishing that a six-year-old was murdered in his own bed, and the perpetrator served barely a decade in prison—his sentence effectively measured more for assault than for murder,” she remarked.
As it stands, Exantus is scheduled for his parole supervision to end in 2026, as per the Kentucky Department of Corrections. However, his current location remains undisclosed, leading to further unease amongst the Tipton family and the larger community.
