Portland, Oregon, continuously finds itself under intense scrutiny due to the strong presence of Antifa. This past summer, headlines centered on their activities outside the ICE facility, while the Portland Police Bureau faced increasing censure for its apparent inaction.
The police’s failure to enforce laws at the ICE facility has escalated tensions—not just among federal agents tasked with safeguarding it, but also for residents of a low-income apartment complex situated nearby. Legal action taken by some residents to compel police action resulted in a court ruling stating that local law enforcement is not required to maintain order outside the federal building.
With the judiciary siding with them, Antifa intensified its nightly operations around the courthouse. However, that changed last week when President Donald Trump invoked the deployment of Oregon National Guardsmen. If local and state authorities are unwilling to fulfill their responsibilities, the federal government will step in.
