In a move that has ignited the ire of the Trump administration, Amazon, the globe’s leading online retailer, has decided to display the added costs of President Trumpâs tariffs alongside product prices. This development, reported by Punchbowl News, appears to serve as a preemptive measure to deflect criticism regarding rising prices on their platform.
This gesture from Amazonâs founder Jeff Bezos, who has recently been seen aligning himself with Trump, is particularly provocative. Bezos, who also owns the Washington Post, has been under scrutiny for implementing notable changes to the editorial direction of his publication, prompting several writers to resign in protest.
During a recent White House press briefing led by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, the topic of Amazonâs tariff display was addressed. Leavitt responded to a reporter’s inquiry with notable fervor, declaring, âThis is a hostile and political act by Amazon. Why didnât Amazon do this when the Biden administration hiked inflation to the highest level in 40 years?â Such a statement effectively reframed the narrative, suggesting that Amazon’s timing was politically motivated.
Leavitt then went on to connect Amazon’s actions to its controversial dealings with China, stating, âIt is not a surprise. As Reuters recently reported, Amazon has partnered with a Chinese propaganda arm.â This partnership, which Amazon initiated to market speeches by the Chinese leader Xi Jinping, raises questions about the companyâs allegiances and its impact on American consumers.
The backdrop of this discourse is the ongoing conversation about reshoring American manufacturing. Leavitt emphasized the importance of domestic production, asserting, âThis is another reason why Americans should buy American. We are anchoring critical supply chains here at home to boost our own manufacturing.â

When pressed about Bezosâs current stance on Trump, Leavitt chose to abstain from speculation, handing the microphone back to Bessent to continue the briefing.
