Sanctuary State Governors Challenge Trump Administration at House Oversight Committee Hearing

In a notable display of political bravado, New York Governor Kathy Hochul, Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz took their seats before the House Oversight Committee on Thursday. The trio did not shy away from taunting the Trump Administration, openly challenging former Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) chief Tom Homan to take action against their sanctuary state policies.

The hearing, aptly titled “A Hearing with Sanctuary State Governors,” quickly turned into a stage for partisan theatrics. Republicans seized the moment to scrutinize the governors, while Democrats directed their ire towards Trump, accusing him of inciting violence and infringing on the rights of undocumented immigrants.

Representative Maxwell Frost (D-FL) used his platform to criticize the Trump Administration for deploying federal troops to quell what he termed a “violent insurrection” in Los Angeles. He insisted that demonstrators were merely exercising their right to nonviolent protest against Trump’s immigration policies.

Frost spotlighted several legal controversies involving public officials, including the arrest of a Milwaukee judge for obstructing justice by concealing an undocumented immigrant from ICE, and a mayor charged with trespassing at an ICE facility. He even referenced calls from Trump for the arrest of California Governor Gavin Newsom. “Why does Trump want to arrest governors?” Frost questioned, suggesting it’s because they represent a formidable challenge to his perceived lawlessness.

In a dramatic moment, he asked the governors how they would respond if federal agents were to arrive at their doors. Hochul’s response was defiant: “If Tom Homan comes to Albany to arrest me, I say, go for it.”

“He can try,” Pritzker added with equal resolve. “I will stand in the way of Tom Homan going after people who don’t deserve to be frightened in their communities.” In a more conciliatory tone, Tim Walz expressed a desire for collaboration rather than confrontation, advocating for bipartisan solutions to complex issues.

Hochul: “If Tom Homan comes to Albany to arrest me, I say, go for it. You can’t intimidate a governor! What is this country coming to when people can threaten us on social media and cable news and try to stop us from doing our jobs? We’re here on the front lines every day, fighting to defend our rights, our values, and the public safety of our residents. Any threat to our responsibilities is an assault on our democracy.”

Pritzker: “Let me begin by saying I have the highest duty to protect the people of my state. If Tom Homan were to try to arrest me, I would stand firm. I would rather he come for me than terrorize the innocent individuals in our communities.”

Walz: “It’s crucial we work together. We have a job to do with limited resources, and equating our non-cooperation with ICE as a failure undermines our responsibilities as governors. I believe we can resolve these challenges through a bipartisan bill. Let’s focus on solutions rather than threats.”
