Minnesota Governor Tim Walz Faces Scrutiny Over Immigration Policies
On Thursday, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz found himself in a politically precarious position during a congressional hearing, as his statements regarding the stateâs immigration policies were called into question. His comments led to a significant backlash, particularly from Republican representatives.
As reported by CBS, Walz was one of three Democratic governorsâalongside New York’s Kathy Hochul and Illinois’s J.B. Pritzkerâwho testified before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee regarding their states’ sanctuary policies. These policies have garnered criticism for allegedly prioritizing undocumented immigrants over U.S. citizens.
In his opening remarks, Walz made contentious claims about Minnesotaâs status as a sanctuary state, insisting he had never signed any legislation to that effect. He further asserted that his administration cooperates with Homeland Security when there are warrants for the arrest of undocumented individuals, claiming adherence to due process.

However, Republican Representative Tom Emmer, hailing from Minnesota, was quick to challenge Walzâs assertions. Emmer highlighted a series of laws that have been perceived as accommodating to undocumented immigrants, effectively countering Walz’s claims of cooperation with federal authorities.
As Emmer laid out his criticisms, Walz appeared visibly uncomfortable, forced into a defensive posture as he faced pointed accusations regarding his administration’s handling of law enforcement and public safety.

EMMER: âIn May 2020, looting, arson, and acts of violence occurred on YOUR watch in Minneapolis after you refused to bring in the National Guard. Governor, your agenda is clear: free healthcare, free driverâs licenses for illegals, while handcuffing law enforcement when theyâre trying to protect citizens in our communities.â
âIf you think thatâs not a sanctuary state, you shouldnât be governor! By turning Minnesota into a magnet for illegals, you have opened up our communities to dangerous criminals, including known terrorists, gang members, murderers, and child predators.â
âYou have sent a resounding message that if you are a hard-working, law-abiding citizen of Minnesota, your safety and well-being are not the priorities of Tim Walz and his administration! But if you come to our state illegally⊠Youâre entitled to free stuff on the taxpayerâs dime.â
âGovernor Walz, your sanctuary state agenda has been defined by your utter failure. You have failed to enforce the rule of law, uphold our national sovereignty, and, most importantly, fail the people of Minnesota. The time for radical state policy is over! The voters made that clear last November when they elected President Trump and Vice President JD Vance. You remember him, donât you?â
