Attorney General Pam Bondi Faces Off with Rep. Madeleine Dean in Heated Congressional Hearing
In a charged session of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies, Attorney General Pam Bondi found herself in the crosshairs of Rep. Madeleine Dean (D-PA). Dean attempted to pin Bondi down on topics ranging from the events of January 6 to her previous role in anti-human trafficking work with Qatar.
Bondi was present to discuss the budget request for the Department of Justice for 2026, yet it became evident that certain Democratic members were more inclined to launch personal attacks on the Trump Administration than engage in fiscal discourse.
The scene unfolded as Dean, appearing to relish a moment of political theatre, interrupted Bondi repeatedly, seemingly more interested in grandstanding than allowing for a substantive conversation.
Initially, Dean sought to ensnare Bondi with inquiries about January 6, accusing her of being anti-police and demanding advice Bondi could supposedly offer to the President regarding pardons for those involved in the January 6 events. “I am never going to talk about conversations, adviceā” Bondi started, but Dean cut her off, insisting that she was entitled to her allotted time and demanding the chairman intervene.
Clearly agitated by the interruptions, Bondi pressed for the chance to respond, with the chairman eventually advising Dean to allow Bondi to finish her statements.
As the President’s chief legal advisor, Bondi is under no obligation to disclose details about legal advice given to the President, protected under attorney-client and executive privileges. This, however, did not deter Dean from attempting to insinuate corruption concerning Bondi’s prior work with the Qatari government. She asserted, āThe three hallmarks of this administration are incompetence, corruption, and cruelty,ā and followed up with a leading question that Bondi skillfully sidestepped, much to Deanās frustration.
In an unexpected twist, Bondi turned the tables on Dean, firing back with a pointed critique: āYou want to talk about incompetence? Youāre the one who claimed Joe Biden was competent on PBS, only to later retract that statement. So donāt talk to me, donāt insult me publicly.ā This remark elicited an outraged response from Dean, who labeled it āvery strange and unprofessionalā while Bondi could be seen chuckling at Deanās escalating theatrics.
Bondi later clarified that her work with Qatar had been thoroughly vetted during her confirmation hearings.
WATCH:
Dean: The three hallmarks of this administration are incompetence, corruption, and cruelty. Iām going to focus today on corruption. Attorney General, have you ever been registered as an agent of a foreign principal under the Foreign Agents Registration Act?
Bondi: I assume youāre referring to my brief representation of Qatarā
Dean: The answer isāNo! Excuse me!
Bondi: Hold on, it was for anti-human trafficking for the World Cup.
Dean: Yes or no!
Bondi: Anti-human trafficking for the World Cup. You canāt put words in my mouth. You want to talk about incompetence? Youāre the one that said Joe Biden was competent on PBS! You had to retract that, so donāt talk to me, donāt insult me publicly.
Dean: Mr. Chairman, this is so discourteous. Itās so outside the committeeās guidelines. Taking a personal shot at me while swiping at Biden? Very strange and very unprofessional of you! The answer is yes or no, and the answer is yes. You were registered as a lobbyist for Qatar. Is that correct? Never mind. Donāt answer. Did you disclose that when you went before the Senate for confirmation? Yes or no? No, it was not in your documents. The answer is no. President Trumpā
Bondi: This was discussed at my confirmation hearings in detail.
Dean: Well, it was discussed, but you failed to bring up the conflict that you had. President Trump recently announced heād accept that $400 million Qatar airplane because it was just prettier than the one he was flying around in. Is it true that you gave advice that this was legally permissible? Yes or No?
Bondi: I will not discuss any legal advice that my Office of Legal Counsel provides to the President on any matter.
Dean: When you spoke before the Senate, you said you would ask for ethical advice. Did you recuse yourself from that issue?
Bondi: And speaking of unprofessional, you say the President wanted a jet because itās pretty? This is a Congressional hearing.
