The Bauhaus movement, known for its emphasis on functionality and design in industrial production, is not typically associated with disciplines like dance. However, for Oskar Schlemmer, a key figure in the movement, translating Bauhaus principles into movement and performance was just as important as creating well-designed furniture or buildings.

Founded in 1919 by German architect Walter Gropius, the Bauhaus school aimed to unite architecture, fine arts, and crafts. Artists and designers like Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, László Moholy-Nagy, Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, and Anni and Josef Albers were all involved in shaping the Bauhaus aesthetic, which focused on minimalism and creating for the social good.

Oskar Schlemmer, the Master of Form at the Bauhaus theatre workshop, was a painter, sculptor, and choreographer best known for his work on the Triadic Ballet. This avant-garde dance production, debuted in 1922, revolved around the concept of threes—three colors (yellow, pink or white, and black) and three costume shapes (square, circle, and triangle).

The Triadic Ballet sought to move away from the decorative frills of traditional ballet, opting instead for costumes that restricted movement and added a modern, almost mechanical quality to the dancers. Schlemmer’s designs, with their wide, bubbly skirts and vibrant stripes, emphasized how bodies moved and interacted in space.

In a colorized film from the 1970s showcasing the Triadic Ballet, dancers moved deliberately across sparse sets with clean lines, resembling pantomimes or puppets. The choreography, with its jilted, robotic movements, often elicited laughter from audiences.

While the Triadic Ballet is rarely reproduced, the Bavarian Junior Ballet will be bringing it back to the stage this June to celebrate its 15th anniversary. Schlemmer’s visionary power continues to inspire new generations of dancers and artists, as seen in the faithful recreation of his costumes and choreography by the Bavarian Junior Ballet.

Additionally, The Oskar Schlemmer Theatre Estate and Archives offer a wealth of archival imagery and drawings on their website, providing a deeper look into the artist’s creative process and vision. The world of technology is constantly evolving, with new innovations and advancements being made every day. From artificial intelligence to virtual reality, there is no shortage of exciting developments in the tech industry. One of the latest trends in technology is the rise of smart homes.

Smart homes, also known as connected homes, are residences equipped with devices and systems that can be controlled remotely through a smartphone or other networked device. These devices can range from smart thermostats and lighting systems to security cameras and door locks. The idea behind smart homes is to make everyday tasks easier and more convenient for homeowners, while also increasing energy efficiency and security.

One of the most popular smart home devices is the smart thermostat. These devices can be programmed to adjust the temperature of your home based on your schedule, saving you money on your energy bills. They can also be controlled remotely, so you can adjust the temperature of your home from anywhere in the world. Smart lighting systems are also gaining popularity, allowing homeowners to control the brightness and color of their lights with a simple voice command or tap of a smartphone.

Security is another key feature of smart homes. With connected security cameras and door locks, homeowners can monitor their property from anywhere and receive alerts if any unusual activity is detected. Some smart locks even allow homeowners to grant access to visitors remotely, making it easier to let in friends or family members when you’re not home.

Overall, smart homes offer a level of convenience and control that was previously unimaginable. With the ability to control your home’s temperature, lighting, and security systems from anywhere in the world, homeowners can enjoy peace of mind and increased comfort. As technology continues to advance, we can expect to see even more exciting developments in the world of smart homes.
