The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has addressed remarks made by Senator Chris Murphy (D-CT) regarding a recently publicized image featuring a Border Patrol agent brandishing a firearm from the passenger side of an unmarked vehicle. This incident occurred Tuesday in Berwyn, Illinois, and has sparked widespread controversy.
DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin stated that the vehicle in question had attempted to ram into the agents’ vehicle. She referenced a prior incident in the Chicago area where a similar threat resulted in federal agents wounding an armed female assailant. According to McLaughlin, the Border Patrol agent in this instance raised a pepper ball gun as a non-lethal deterrent, asserting, “We’re not playing.”
Laura Rodriguez, a reporter from the Chicago Tribune, shared both a frame from the video of the encounter and a still photo. This revealing the activities of a self-styled citizen patrol group that actively observes and documents federal enforcement of immigration laws in the area.
Rodriguez tweeted, “A federal agent points a weapon at a woman who was filming them. Jess, a U.S. citizen and member of a neighborhood patrol that records and shares ICE activity across the city, was filming when this occurred earlier today in Berwyn.”
Update: Jess clarified that while she posted the picture, it was sent to her from another person patrolling – to post.
They’re U.S citizens who were solely recording the agents.

Rodriguez subsequently shared footage of the episode:
Here’s a video.
I cannot confirm whether the person who posted it is the one who recorded it. People have been widely sharing and reposting photos and videos of ICE incidents to notify the Chicago community about their activities. Most consider them their only trusted source. pic.twitter.com/KvrfiG3HCe

Senator Murphy decried the situation, asserting, “This is out of hand. These agents are there to incite trouble and violence, not to ensure safety. Such scenes are emblematic of war-torn countries, not America.”

In response, McLaughlin retorted,
Here’s the real story:
As Border Patrol was conducting targeted enforcement, a vehicle aggressively trailed our officers and intentionally veered into their vehicle in an apparent attempt to ram it.
Despite the persistent violent threats against our law enforcement personnel, these agents adhered strictly to their training — the weapon employed was a pepper ball gun intended for riot control without inflicting lethal harm.
Those who wish to intimidate or attack our officers should not be shocked when deterrent measures are employed to safeguard our personnel. We aren’t playing.
