We can be a sanctuary for immigrants but still fight crime

As the Mayor of New York City and a former police officer with 22 years of experience, my top priority has always been the safety of New Yorkers. When I took office, one of my main goals was to help the city recover from the impact of COVID-19 and bring down crime rates. I am proud to say that overall crime in New York City decreased last year, and we have seen three consecutive months of double-digit declines in major crimes.

Tomorrow, I will be testifying before the United States Congress on how New York City, under my administration’s leadership, can continue to reduce crime while still being a sanctuary city. It is important to dispel the misconception that being a sanctuary city means providing a safe haven for violent criminals. We are committed to holding accountable those who commit violent crimes, regardless of their immigration status, and ensuring the safety of the public.

Law-abiding immigrants, including undocumented individuals, play a significant role in our city. They contribute billions of dollars in taxes, stimulate the economy, and have been essential workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. Immigrants have kept essential services running and played a crucial role in the functioning of our city.

Despite the complex web of federal, state, and city laws, it is imperative that we work together to address long-standing issues. Collaboration with the federal government is key to managing the population of our city effectively. Every resident, regardless of their immigration status, should be able to access vital services without fear of deportation.

As a former police officer, I have witnessed the negative impact of individuals being too afraid to seek help from law enforcement. Fear of deportation can prevent individuals from reporting crimes or seeking medical care, which ultimately undermines public safety. We must create an environment where all residents feel safe and protected.

The recent influx of migrants seeking shelter in New York City has presented challenges, but through strategic management and policies, we have been able to assist thousands of individuals on their journeys. By implementing restrictions and advocating for comprehensive border policies, we have been able to address the crisis while also reducing the strain on city resources.

Comprehensive immigration reform is long overdue, and I am committed to working with federal officials to address this issue. We must prioritize the safety and well-being of all residents, regardless of their immigration status. Collaboration between city leaders and federal authorities is essential in combatting crime and ensuring the security of our communities.

In conclusion, as Mayor of New York City, I am dedicated to upholding the safety and rights of all residents. By working together and advocating for comprehensive immigration reform, we can create a more inclusive and secure city for everyone. Thank you for your continued support.

Adams, Mayor of New York City.
