The Denver Nuggets are facing a pivotal moment with their star player, Nikola Jokic. While Jokic’s status as a star makes him untouchable for the team, recent blockbuster trades in the NBA have shifted perceptions of player value. The LA Lakers’ trade for Luka Doncic has shown that no player is truly off-limits in the right deal.

Fans were shocked when the Dallas Mavericks traded Doncic for Anthony Davis after leading them to the NBA Finals in 2024. This move has raised questions about the future of star players like Jokic. In a recent press conference, Nuggets owner Josh Kroenke addressed the possibility of trading away Jokic, emphasizing the team’s reluctance to enter the luxury tax apron.

Kroenke made it clear that the Nuggets are wary of entering the luxury tax apron due to the team’s injury history. He stressed that trading Nikola Jokic is a scenario he never wants to contemplate. While Kroenke acknowledged the financial constraints the team faces, he also highlighted the importance of keeping their star player on the roster.

Despite offering Jokic a lucrative contract extension worth $212.5 million over three years, Kroenke remains uncertain about whether the Serbian superstar will accept the deal. The Nuggets’ lack of depth since their championship win in 2023 has raised concerns about Jokic’s future with the team. Bleacher Report’s Dan Favale noted Jokic’s comments about the team’s lack of depth and Kroenke’s push to run it back.

With limited resources for trades and free agency, the Nuggets are facing a challenging offseason as they try to rebuild their competitive edge. Jokic’s decision on the contract extension could hinge on the team’s ability to improve and compete for another championship. While trading Jokic is unlikely, the Nuggets must address their roster shortcomings to convince their star player to stay.

In conclusion, the Denver Nuggets are at a crossroads with Nikola Jokic’s future hanging in the balance. While Jokic’s star status makes him a valuable asset, the team’s struggles since their championship win have put pressure on the organization to make significant changes. The upcoming offseason will be crucial for the Nuggets as they look to convince Jokic to commit to the team long-term.
